Chapter Six

Sophie

Earlier that day

“Ronnie are you home yet?” I call out as I walk into the house.

There is something special about being able to come home to someone else. I didn’t realize how lonely I was in my apartment until I started sharing with Ronnie.

I follow the smell coming from the kitchen and see Pierre, the French chef Ronnie hired right after I moved in, working his magic by the oven. I sit down on the stool by the bar and give him a broad smile.

“Pierre, I don’t know what you’re doing, but it smells fabulous.”

“It is an appetizer dish I’m trying,” he grins. “Do you wish to be my guinea pig as you Americans say?”

“If it tastes as good as it smells, I’d be honored to be your guinea pig,” I smile back at him.

He spins around, turns to the oven, and slides a tray in front of me. Wrinkling my nose, I stare up at Pierre with a pleading look on my face.

“You know how I feel about fungus Pierre.” My stomach rumbles as I look at the beautiful stuffed mushrooms. I normally hate mushrooms but somehow Pierre makes everything taste and look delicious.

“You may not like mushrooms prepared by other people, but you will love Pierre’s mushrooms, mademoiselle,” he says.

I roll my eyes, take one of the little caps, and pop it into my mouth.

A flood of different flavors dance across my tongue making me moan in appreciation. Before I even realize what I’m doing, I reach for another one.

“I don’t know how you do it monsieur,” I wink. “It seems only you can make fungus delectable to my taste buds.”

“That’s quite the compliment coming from you Miss Sophie. You truly are the most ardent hater of mushrooms I have ever met.”

I smile at Pierre. He still carries his Paris accent, making everything he says sound elegant and exotic.

“I’m sure you could slather a piece of cardboard with one of your sauces and make me eat it if you wanted to.”

Pierre lets out a laugh and turns around to take something out of the oven. “Now, Miss Sophie,” he says over his shoulder. “Are you and Mr. Ronnie going to be eating in tonight?”

I’m just about to answer him when my phone buzzes in my pocket.

“Hold on one sec, Pierre,” I say and I pull up the incoming message from Ronnie.
